It would be simple if only knowledge were needed to understand lordship. Because the truth of lordship is very simple. It’s submission. So, pull out the dictionary and learn about the word submission. You can also study the Bible and other resources to learn about the word submission. Study it to your hearts content. But once you become an expert on the word submission, you will inevitably ask the question, “Who must I submit to?”
This is where the journey begins. It starts with submission to Jesus Christ. Then it continues with submission to His church, submission to those in authority over us, and submission to our God given role as brother or sister, husband or wife, child, neighbor, employee, employer, or any other role we find ourselves in. And because the will is involved, our interactions with Jesus Christ and others can become individually complex and unpredictable.
Then you may ask, “How do I submit?” Unfortunately, I can’t answer that for you. It is a journey I leave to you and your will. But I will tell you a little bit about my own journey, and how my will and I are learning about submission to Jesus Christ and to the roles He has entrusted to me. Perhaps a description of my own journey will help you understand what lordship can mean in your own personal journey. Just so you know, I am still learning lessons as my journey continues!
Because the people of Israel were stubborn and obstinate, they wandered in the wilderness for forty years before they were allowed to enter the Promised Land. Even after they entered the Promised Land, they were not allowed to claim all of it because of their disobedience. Our stubbornness could result in us wandering around in our own wilderness for a long time. So, the sooner we accept the truths from the word of God and submit to Jesus Christ as our Lord, the sooner we can leave the wilderness and enter the promised land of fellowship with Him and our other brothers and sisters in Christ.
In the Bible Moses told the people of Israel to trust in the Lord (Deuteronomy 1:29-33). The Lord lead them out of slavery under the Egyptians, cared for them in the wilderness, and went before them “with a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of cloud by day.” The Lord guided them and provided what they needed in miraculous ways. And yet they often fell away from Him.
After everything Jesus Christ has done for us, are we afraid to trust Him in all things? Our individual journey will span our entire life and we will make mistakes along the way. But seeking Jesus Christ as our Lord, as we experience His word and submit to His will as He reveals it to us, is a behavior that will lead us into the promised land He has prepared for us. Even then our journey continues, and He will help us to fully claim everything in the inheritance He has for us.
Enjoy the journey!
